To remove your home address from the internet, identify the pages displaying it, ask the relevant website to remove it and handle Google results separately. If the address comes from a business register, check the available options with that official source too. One request does not cover every copy.
Finding your front door on a public listing can make you want to delete everything immediately. Start by saving the exact link and checking where the address actually appears. This guide helps you choose the right request and includes a message you can adapt. The GDPR remedies and business formalities discussed here concern France and the European framework; they are not a description of every country's rules.
Where is your address still visible?
Open the page while signed out of the website and look for the address. A private browsing window can help distinguish public information from details shown only inside your account.
Record three things: the page URL, where the address appears and the date you checked. A postal address in a PDF, a photo of a letter and a search snippet may require different actions.
- It appears on the page: contact the website publishing it.
- It appears in an attached document: include the file URL, not just the page link.
- It appears only on Google: check whether the source has already changed before choosing a form.
- It appears on several sites: keep a separate entry for each page, even when the listings look identical.
To widen your search, try your name in quotation marks with your town, then a previous town if you have moved. Our guide to people finders in France explains how to check your own results without buying a report about yourself.
You can also run a free Data Knight scan to identify traces on the public web and support your own checks. No tool can guarantee it will find every page containing an address.
Who should you ask to remove your address?
A directory or people search website
Look for the website's privacy page, rights request form or removal process. Use its official channel and identify the exact listing. Avoid posting your request in a public comment, where you might create another copy of the address.
If the website charges to remove its own listing, check the advertised scope. Our article on BrixHub and paid data removal explains the difference between removing a record from an index and eliminating copies of a breach.
France's data protection authority, the CNIL, explains when erasure rights apply. Information that is no longer needed or is processed unlawfully can support a request. Exceptions include legal obligations and freedom of information. Identity documents are not automatically required: relevant evidence may be requested where there are reasonable doubts about your identity.
An old profile, advert or post
If you control the account, remove the address from the profile, old adverts and accessible documents. Check the result while signed out. Making a profile private can limit visibility, but does not remove screenshots or copies published elsewhere.
If someone else posted the information, use the platform's reporting process and contact its operator where appropriate. Explain that the information is a home address and include the relevant link.
A business listing or official document
A director's home address and a business address may be the same property while being subject to different publication rules. Sending the same generic message to every directory may therefore miss the source of the problem.
In France, Service Public describes how an individual entrepreneur can request that a home address is not publicly disclosed. For companies, the INPI explains address concealment and replacing documents with redacted public versions. These procedures do not remove the company's disclosure obligations. The linked French formalities do not automatically apply to a business registered elsewhere.
The CNIL confirms that professional directories must comply with the GDPR, including when reusing public information. Our Societe.com and Pappers guide covers the steps for different sources and business structures.
A message to request removal of your address
Use this as a starting point when contacting a website. Adapt the reason to your situation. It does not replace a confidentiality application to a business register.
Subject: request to remove my home address
Hello,
This page displays my home address: [exact URL]. The information appears [location on the page or in the document].
I request that this address is removed from public display for the following reason: [explain your circumstances and why publication is no longer necessary or infringes your rights].
Please let me know how you have handled my request. If you believe continued publication is justified, please explain the basis and reasons for that decision.
[Name and reply contact]
Replace the bracketed text before sending. An old home still presented as your current address, for example, needs a different explanation from an address appearing in an advert you have just deleted.
Keep the message and acknowledgement. If the form does not send a receipt, record the date and privately save a screenshot of the confirmation. Do not add your current address to remove an old one unless it is needed for the request.
How do you remove your address from Google results?
Google offers a personal-information removal process that covers home addresses. Provide the relevant URLs; its assessment considers factors including public interest. Removal from Google does not delete the source page.
You can make this request alongside your request to the website. Our guide to removing personal information from Google results helps you identify the appropriate route.
If the address has already disappeared from the page, use the outdated-content refresh process when the old information remains in the result. Provide the changed page's URL and check the request status afterwards. The aim is to update the result, not necessarily remove the whole listing.
How can you track requests without missing another copy?
Keep a private note with one entry per URL. Record the recipient, submission date, response and next check. Use precise observations: “address absent from page”, “document still accessible” or “response received, removal not yet checked”.
Fictional example: Camille finds a former home address on a professional listing and in its Google snippet. After the website confirms a correction, Camille opens both the page and its attached PDF. If the PDF still contains the address, the first request has not resolved everything. If only the Google description is outdated, the next step concerns the search engine.
Recheck the links after each response, then search your name again. An email confirmation is not proof that every copy has disappeared.
What if the website refuses or does not respond?
For a request covered by the GDPR, the usual response period is one month. A justified two-month extension is possible if communicated within the initial period. This is not a guaranteed removal deadline. The CNIL explains the French complaint process after you have contacted the organisation. Retain the correspondence and identify what remains visible. Elsewhere, contact the competent data protection authority for your situation.
If the address appears alongside threats, preserve evidence and report the content to the platform. An erasure request does not replace contacting the police where your safety is at risk.
How Data Knight can help
The free scan helps identify exposures and organise your next steps. You can then review the findings and choose eligible removal requests you would like Data Knight to handle.
You can still contact websites and Google directly without buying a service. Data Knight's assistance covers supported sources and requests. It does not guarantee deletion from mandatory registers, approval by Google or removal of every copy.
